Black Friday -- The Day after Thanksgiving in the United States is called Black Friday. Traditionally this day is the true start of the holiday shopping season.

Many believe that this day is called Black Friday because merchants operated in the red (did not make a profit) until this day when sales were large, and they moved to the Black (profitable). This is only a rumor that has not been confirmed. Some who don't agree point to the fact that many stores have different fiscal years, or that others are profitable all year.
